Tummy Tuck Surgery Sydney (Abdominoplasty)
Abdominoplasty or ‘tummy tuck’ is a common cosmetic surgery procedure that removes undesired fat and excess loose skin from the abdomen. This extra skin, fat and weakened muscle may naturally be caused by pregnancy, old age, or weight change, which proves resistant to improved diet, exercise and lifestyle. In most cases, Abdominoplasty will restore shape and tone of the abdomen to create a firmer and smoother body profile.Abdominoplasty is commonly combined with liposuction to re-contour and reshape the entire abdomen, flank, waist and love handle areas.
Dr Ansari’s Philosophy on Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck)
The best candidates for the Abdominoplasty procedure are men or women who are in relatively good shape but are worried about excess abdominal skin and large fat deposit resistant to diet and exercise.
A common complaint, especially from women who have had kids, is a protruding tummy, or excess folds of skin or fat. Tummy tuck operation is designed to solve this problem, and there are several variations of the procedure for those who just want to tighten the area and only remove a little excess skin.
There are many benefits for men also, particulary those seeking to loose their “pot belly”, “spare tire”, or “love handles”. Tummy tuck is not intended to be a quick fix to eliminate excess weight. Rather, this operation is best suited for an active, generally healthy individual who has sincerely attempted diet and exercise, but whose midsection stubbornly remains unaffected by those efforts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Mostpatients fall under two categories: skin-only abdominoplasty (which includesa mini tummy tuck) and those requiring a full tummy tuck (FTT), which involvesrelocation of your belly button, and reconstruction and tightening of the underlying fascia and muscles.
Once Dr Ansari has performed a physical examination, he will be able to determine which of these two tummy tuck procedures is more suitable for your needs. Please note that Dr Ansari almost always performs a liposuction procedure at the same time as a tummy tuck, to remove excess fat from yourabdomen and love handles, achieving the best possible results for you.
Dr Ansari will be able to determine which technique is best for your needs at your consultation, however if you have a considerable pouch and your abdominal fascia and muscles are stretched, you will require a full tummy tuck. On the other hand, if you have tight muscles, buta small amount of loose skin, you may qualify for a modified or mini tummy tuck(abdominoplasty).
• You must be in good physical health.
• You must have no wound healing disorders.
• You must be in a good state of mental health.
• You must be willing to accept having a scar, which is usually hiddenin your undergarments.
• You must not be pregnant.
• You must be at or near your target body fat percentage and not be significantly overweight.
• You must be in a financial position to pay for your surgery and any additional unforeseencosts that may arise from possible complications.
The skin tightening effects of non-surgical methods, such as radiofrequency and lasers, cannot give you a significant improvement in your appearance, nor do they have any effect on the underlying muscles and fascia; any perceived benefits do not last.
The length of your surgery will vary on the amount of correction needed to achieve your desired results. For example, amini tummy tuck, may only take 1 to 2 hours, whilst a full tummy tuck can take anywhere from 3 to 4 hours, depending on whether or not you have any other procedures performed at the same time. For optimum results, Dr Ansari usually performs liposuction of your abdomen and love handles at the same time;liposuction on its own can sometimes take 1-2 hrs.
There will be some discomfort, swelling and tightening after your abdominoplasty, and you may not be able to stand up straight or lie flat for a while.Pain is generally not an issue and is easily manageable with oral pain medications.A full tummy tuck is an invasive procedure, however the recovery time anddiscomfort will be worth it once you are healed.
An abdominoplasty can be performed under twilight sedation and local anaesthetic or under general anaesthesia. During your consultation with Dr Ansari, together you will decide on the anaesthetic that will be used for your surgery, which depends on the complexity of the surgery and your preferences.
Although unlikely, in some instances, your health insurance company may pay for the anaesthesia or hospital admission fees. It is important that you ask your insurance company if a full or partial coverage is available for your procedure.
Your recovery period will ultimately be determined by the invasiveness of your surgeryand your own personal pain tolerance. You can discuss these time frames with Dr Ansari during your post-operative consultations, howeverit could take around 4 to 6 weeks, before your wounds are healed enough to undertake these activities.
Around 2 to 3 weeks following your abdominoplasty, you can apply silicone sheetingor gel to your wound, as this has a proven record of improving the healing of scars.
Stretch marks are produced by the over distension of your skin resulting in damage to skin collagen , but only in situations in which there are various hormones circulating, as in pregnancy and puberty. Stretch marks located on yourlower abdomen will be removed during your tummy tuck, along with the extra skin. Stretch markslocated on yourupper abdomen will be shifted downwards, as the skin is relocated. Any remainingstretch marks are tightened and smoothed outto some extent, but not necessary completely fixed.
There is sometimes a scar around yournavel with a full abdominoplasty and almost always a low horizontal scar across yourlower abdomen, just above the pubic hairline. Sometimes there is also a short vertical scar above the larger horizontal scar, formed due to closure of previous belly button wound.
Fat cannot come back unless you regain weight, in which case all body areas will share the weight gain. However, after a tummy tuck the treated area has a permanently decreased capacity for additional fat, because so many of the fat cells have simply been removed.
It is important to remember however, that skin stretches with the passage of time, and so as the years go by, there will bemore skin, and for the same reason, the muscles will gradually stretch out again. Nevertheless, you will still have a much better contouring of your abdomen, regardless of how much time has passed following your tummy tuck. It is recommended for women to undergo tummy tuck procedure after completing the family.
Everyone’s recovery time after a tummy tuck is different, however there are a few generalities we can make. For example, for the first 5 to 7days, you mayexperience some abdominal discomfort, but you will be prescribed pain medications to take as needed. Some of these medication can be fairlysedative, so you are advised not to drive or operate machinery, whilst taking this medication.
After the first week following your tummy tuck, you can startperforminglight exercises, such as walking outside or on the treadmill, even using a stationary bike. At the same time, it is important that you refrain from impact exercises, for example running or aerobics, until at least 4 to 6 weeks following your surgery, depending on how your wound is healing.
If you work in an office, you can commence work after 7 to 10 days, whereas heavier types of work should be left until 4 to 6 weeks following your surgery. A compression garment needs to be worn for 2 weeks, both day and night, and for a further 2weeks overnight.
There is nothing mystical or special about "cellulite", it is just fat, but it is fat located just under the skin, making a rippled look that is quite apparent. Abdominoplasty removes some of this cellulite fat also, but it may be difficult to eliminate cellulite entirely. Weight loss by dieting in conjunction with Abdominoplasty is often the most effective way.
