Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty)
Abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck is a common cosmetic surgery procedure that removes undesired fat and excess loose skin from the abdomen while tightening up the abdominal muscles. Changes to the midsection may be caused by pregnancy, age or weight change, and can be resistant to even the most rigorous weight loss efforts. In most cases, an abdominoplasty will restore shape and tone to the abdomen, creating a firmer and smoother body profile. The procedure is commonly combined with liposuction to recontour and reshape the entire abdomen, waist, hips and flanks.
Dr Ansari has extensive experience in tummy tuck procedures and will tailor your surgery to your precise needs and desired results. By combining nearly all his tummy tucks with liposuction to help remove stubborn pockets of subcutaneous fat, Dr Ansari can achieve the sculpted results sought by men and women alike. Dr Ansari on Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck)
A common complaint, especially from women who have had kids, is a protruding tummy, or excess folds of skin or fat. Tummy tuck operation is designed to solve this problem, and there are several variations of the procedure for those who just want to tighten the area and only remove a little excess skin.
There are many benefits for men also, particularly those seeking to lose their “pot belly”, “spare tire”, or “love handles”. Tummy tuck is not intended to be a quick fix to eliminate excess weight. Rather, this operation is best suited for an active, generally healthy individual who has sincerely attempted diet and exercise, but whose midsection stubbornly remains unaffected by those efforts.
Abdominoplasty can be performed under twilight sedation and local anaesthetic, or under general anaesthesia. During your consultation with Dr Ansari, you will discuss the right type of anaesthetic for your surgery, based on your personal preference and the complexity of the procedure. Once the anaesthesia is administered, Dr Ansari will make an incision across your lower abdomen that extends from hipbone to hipbone if you are undergoing a full tummy tuck. Incisions for mini tummy tucks are usually shorter. The incisions will be placed low enough that they will be hidden underneath your clothing to minimise visible scarring after surgery.
Dr Ansari will then tighten your abdominal muscles while removing excess tissue and fat to sculpt a flatter appearance to the midsection. Loose skin will also be eliminated, so you are left with a smooth, natural result. When necessary, the belly button will also be repositioned to a more attractive location. The length of your surgery will vary, with mini tummy tucks taking around one to two hours, while a full tummy tuck usually lasts three to four hours. Dr Ansari will likely perform liposuction at the same time to sculpt a more attractive result without adding an extensive amount of time to your procedure.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW MANY ABDOMINOPLASTY TECHNIQUES ARE THERE?
Most patients fall under two categories: skin-only abdominoplasty (which includes a mini tummy tuck) and those requiring a full tummy tuck (FTT), which involves relocation of your belly button, and reconstruction and tightening of the underlying fascia and muscles.
Once Dr Ansari has performed a physical examination, he will be able to determine which of these two tummy tuck procedures is more suitable for your needs. Please note that Dr Ansari almost always performs a liposuction procedure at the same time as a tummy tuck, to remove excess fat from your abdomen and love handles, achieving the best possible results for you.
HOW DO I KNOW WHETHER OR NOT I WILL NEED A MINI TUMMY TUCK OR A FULL TUMMY TUCK (FTT)?
Dr Ansari will be able to determine which technique is best for your needs at your consultation, however if you have a considerable pouch and your abdominal fascia and muscles are stretched, you will require a full tummy tuck. On the other hand, if you have tight muscles, but a small amount of loose skin, you may qualify for a modified or mini tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A TUMMY TUCK PROCEDURE?
Although only a qualified Cosmetic Surgeon can determine if you are a good candidate for Tummy Tuck or abdominoplasty, there is a set of general criteria for this procedure, including:
- You must be in good physical health.
- You must have no wound healing disorders.
- You must be in a good state of mental health.
- You must be willing to accept having a scar, which is usually hidden in your undergarments.
- You must not be pregnant.
- You must be at or near your target body fat percentage and not be significantly overweight.
- You must be in a financial position to pay for your surgery and any additional unforeseen costs that may arise from possible complications.
DOES A NON-SURGICAL TUMMY TUCK METHOD WORK?
The skin tightening effects of non-surgical methods, such as radio frequency and lasers, cannot give you a significant improvement in your appearance, nor do they have any effect on the underlying muscles and fascia; any perceived benefits do not last.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO PERFORM MY TUMMY TUCK SURGERY?
The length of your surgery will vary on the amount of correction needed to achieve your desired results. For example, a mini tummy tuck, may only take 1 to 2 hours, whilst a full tummy tuck can take anywhere from 3 to 4 hours, depending on whether or not you have any other procedures performed at the same time. For optimum results, Dr Ansari usually performs liposuction of your abdomen and love handles at the same time; liposuction on its own can sometimes take 1-2 hrs.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY TUMMY TUCK RECOVERY? HOW MUCH DOES IT HURT?
There will be some discomfort, swelling and tightening after your abdominoplasty, and you may not be able to stand up straight or lie flat for a while.Pain is generally not an issue and is easily manageable with oral pain medications. A full tummy tuck is an invasive procedure, however the recovery time and discomfort will be worth it once you are healed.
WHAT TYPE OF ANAESTHESIA WILL I HAVE FOR MY TUMMY TUCK?
An abdominoplasty can be performed under twilight sedation and local anaesthetic or under general anaesthesia. During your consultation with Dr Ansari, together you will decide on the anaesthetic that will be used for your surgery, which depends on the complexity of the surgery and your preferences.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF ABDOMINOPLASTY SURGERY?
The most common risks of tummy tuck surgery are infection, hematoma, seroma, prolonged numbness, incision opening, wound healing problems, scar asymmetry, “dog ears” and anaesthesia risks.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT BEFORE I CAN DO STRENUOUS EXERCISE OR HAVE INTERCOURSE?
Your recovery period will ultimately be determined by the invasiveness of your surgery and your own personal pain tolerance. You can discuss these time frames with Dr Ansari during your post-operative consultations, however it could take around 4 to 6 weeks, before your wounds are healed enough to undertake these activities.
WHAT TREATMENTS FOR MY TUMMY TUCK SCAR ACTUALLY WORK?
Around 2 to 3 weeks following your abdominoplasty, you can apply silicone sheeting or gel to your wound, as this has a proven record of improving the healing of scars.
DOES ABDOMINOPLASTY TAKE CARE OF STRETCH MARKS?
Stretch marks located in your lower abdomen will be shifted downward as the skin is relocated. Any remaining stretch marks are tightened and smoothed to some extent, but not necessarily eliminated.
WHERE WILL MY SCARS BE LOCATED?
Nearly all tummy tucks involve a low horizontal scar across your lower abdomen, just above the pubic hairline. You might also have a scar around your navel if your belly button is repositioned during your surgery.
CAN THE SAME PROBLEMS COME BACK AFTER ABDOMINOPLASTY?
Fat cannot come back unless you regain weight, in which case all body areas will share the weight gain. However, after a tummy tuck the treated area has a permanently decreased capacity for additional fat, because so many of the fat cells have simply been removed.
It is important to remember however, that skin stretches with the passage of time, and so as the years go by, there will be more skin, and for the same reason, the muscles will gradually stretch out again. Nevertheless, you will still have a much better contouring of your abdomen, regardless of how much time has passed following your tummy tuck. It is recommended for women to undergo tummy tuck procedure after completing the family.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PERIOD AFTER ABDOMINOPLASTY?
Everyone’s recovery time after a tummy tuck is different, however there are a few generalities we can make. For example, for the first 5 to 7days, you may experience some abdominal discomfort, but you will be prescribed pain medications to take as needed. Some of these medication can be fairly sedative, so you are advised not to drive or operate machinery, whilst taking this medication.
After the first week following your tummy tuck, you can start performing light exercises, such as walking outside or on the treadmill, even using a stationary bike. At the same time, it is important that you refrain from impact exercises, for example running or aerobics, until at least 4 to 6 weeks following your surgery, depending on how your wound is healing.
If you work in an office, you can commence work after 7 to 10 days, whereas heavier types of work should be left until 4 to 6 weeks following your surgery. A compression garment needs to be worn for 2 weeks, both day and night, and for a further 2weeks overnight.
DOES ABDOMINOPLASTY TAKE CARE OF CELLULITE?
Cellulite consists of fat located just under the skin, which creates the rippled appearance or orange peel look. Abdominoplasty removes some of this cellulite fat, but it may be challenging to eliminate cellulite entirely. Weight loss in conjunction with abdominoplasty is often the most effective way to minimise cellulite.
